Normal State Implicature

چکیده

In the right situation, a speaker can use an unqualified indefinite description without being misunderstood. This use of language, normal slate implicature, is a kind of conversational implicature, i.e. a non-truth-functional context-dependent inference based upon language users' awareness of principles of cooperative conversation. I present a convention for identifying normal state implicatures which is based upon mutual beliefs of the speaker and hearer about certain properties of the speaker's plan. A key property is the precondition that an entity playing a role in the plan must be in a normal state with respect to the plan. 1 I n t r o d u c t i o n In the right situation, a speaker can use an unqualified indefinite description without being misunderstood. For example, a typical customer in a typical pet shop who said ( la) in response to the clerk's question in (1) would expect to be understood as meaning (lb). The goal of this paper is to formally describe such uses of language. 1 1A similar use of l anguage is no ted in [McC87]. McCa r thy (pp. 29-30) discusses the p rob l em of b r i d ~ n g the gap be tween a " ra ther direct [ translat ion] into first order logic" of a s t a t e m e n t of the Miss ionar ies a n d Canniba l s puzzle, and a r ep re sen ta t ion sui table for devis ing a solut ion to the puzzle. Reflections on Jennifer Saul's View of Successful Communication and Conversational Implicature

Saul (2002) criticizes a view on the relationship between speaker meaning and conversational implicatures according to which speaker meaning is exhaustively comprised of what is said and what is implicated. In the course of making her points, she develops a couple of new notions which she calls “utterer-implicature” and “audience-implicature”. She then makes certain claims about the relationshi...

Children interpret disjunction as conjunction: Consequences for theories of implicature and child development*

We present evidence that preschool children understand disjunctive sentences as if they were conjunctive. The result holds for matrix disjunctions as well as disjunctions embedded under every. At the same time, there is evidence that children understand or as inclusve disjunction in downwardentailing contexts. We propose to explain this pattern of results by assuming that the child knows the in...

Comedy, Context and Unsaid Meaning: A Case Study in Conversational Implicature

Pragmatics moves away from the word level and sentence level study of language towards the study of language in real-world context and at discourse level whereby two or more participants take part in conversation. There are moments when the speaker explicitly says something but the listener may have other interpretations and inferences from their statements. The aim of this study was to demonst...

When some is not every: dissociating scalar implicature generation and mismatch.

Making inferences beyond the literal meaning of sentences occurs with certain scalar expressions via scalar implicatures. For example, adults usually interpret some as some but not all. On the basis of behavioral research, it has been suggested that processing implicatures is cognitively costly. However, many studies have used cases where sentences with some did not match the context in which t...

The Intuitive Basis of Implicature: Relevance Theoretic Implicitness versus Gricean Implying

The notion of implicature was first introduced by Grice (1967, 1989), who defined it essentially as what is communicated less what is said. This definition contributed in part to the proliferation of a large number of different species of implicature by neo-Griceans. Relevance theorists have responded to this by proposing a shift back to the distinction between explicit and implicit meaning (co...
